The Metropolitan Museum of Art's College Group at the Met and Selected Shorts, a short story performance series at Symphony Space and on public radio around the country, are seeking short stories for a writing contest inspired by the special exhibition Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans, which opened at the Museum on September 22.
If you are an undergraduate student, 18 or older, who loves to write, come see Robert Frank's The Americans and write a short story of no more than 500 words based on one of ten selected photographs from the exhibition. Email your submission to metcollegegroup@metmuseum.org by 11:59 p.m. (EST) on October 28, 2009, with the phrase "Robert Frank Writing Contest" in the subject line. All submissions should include a cover sheet with entrant's name, address, telephone number, current undergraduate school, expected year of graduation and email address. Two winners will have their short stories read by actors at a live event along with readings of works by Frank's contemporaries, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, as well as works by current writers.
The event begins at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18 with a special viewing of Robert Frank's The Americans at the Met. Afterward, the program continues at Symphony Space on Broadway at 95th for an 8:00 p.m. performance of Selected Shorts featuring our winning stories. The reading will be recorded and is expected to be broadcast in the spring of 2010 during NPR's Selected Shorts program. For ticket information, please visit symphonyspace.org
